The problem
Skill-based treatment teaches a sequence of skills (communication, tolerance, and cooperation), each building on the last and advanced only once the learner has mastered it. In every trial, practitioners present the current target, record the learner's response and any problem behavior, and decide what comes next, all while keeping the session running. Paper is flexible but doesn't graph, doesn't calculate agreement between observers, and doesn't travel between team members. General-purpose data applications graph well but weren't designed around these procedures.
The result is a workflow most clinicians recognize: data captured on paper during session, then re-entered somewhere else afterward, often hours later, sometimes not at all.
